particle can be a single atom,  an atom makes the smallest possible particles..

Particles/molecules/atoms = same thing. A particle is a term used for any single small thing. It could be an individual atom, a small molecule of water or something as big as dust or sand. A molecule just means that there are two or more atoms chemically bonded together.
